A lot of businesses in the UAE are burning dirhams on Meta right now doing something that stopped working a while ago. They sit in Ads Manager, stack up interest layers, narrow by job title, age, behaviour, and feel like they are being strategic. They are not. They are trying to outsmart one of the most valuable companies in the world, sitting on more data about human behaviour than almost anyone. Say that out loud and it sounds a bit arrogant.
Here is what actually works now.
Meta’s targeting is already better than yours
Meta has been building its understanding of people for years. Billions of signals, every scroll, every pause, every click, every purchase. The algorithm knows things about your potential customer that you could never find in a dropdown menu. When you spend hours trying to perfectly pin down your exact buyer in the settings, you are working against that, not with it.
The manual targeting approach made sense years ago when the machine learning was weaker and you had to guide it harder. That is not the world we are in anymore. Broad targeting with the right creative consistently beats narrow targeting with average creative. That is just the reality of the platform today.
The creative and the landing page do the targeting now
About eighty percent of the outcome on Meta comes down to two things: the creative and the landing page. That is basically the whole game. The ad itself, the hook, the message, the visuals, the words you use, that is what pulls the right person in and filters the wrong one out. The landing page is what converts them or loses them.
When you build a creative around the real problem your customer has, the actual words they use in their own head when they are lying awake at night thinking about it, Meta picks that up. It finds the people who respond to that message. You are not doing the targeting. The message is.
This is a completely different way of thinking about the platform. Instead of asking “who do I want to reach”, you ask “what does my person actually feel, want, and say to themselves”. Then you build everything around that answer.
What this means for how you build ads
Get into the real language your customer uses. Not the polished version, not the industry terminology, the raw version. What do they type into Google at midnight when the problem is bad enough? What do they say to a friend when they describe the frustration? That is your creative brief.
The hook of the ad should feel like it was pulled straight from their internal monologue. The landing page should carry that same thread all the way through to the call to action. When those two things are aligned and genuinely speak to a real problem, the algorithm does the rest. It finds more people who look like the ones already engaging.
You can still give the campaign direction. If you are selling something for kids, selecting parents makes sense. If you are selling a high-end service to business owners, a broad business owner signal is fine. But trying to layer it down to the perfect slice of the market in the settings, that is where the wasted spend lives.
Where most campaigns go wrong
The most common mistake we see with UAE businesses running Meta ads is that they treat the targeting as the strategy and treat the creative as an afterthought. They will spend days on audience research and then put together an ad in an afternoon with generic copy and a stock image.
Flip that. The creative deserves most of your time and most of your thinking. A genuinely good ad that speaks to a real desire or a real pain, pointed at a broad audience, will outperform a perfectly targeted campaign with a weak message almost every time. The platform rewards relevance, and relevance comes from the message, not the settings.
The shift that changes everything
Once you stop trying to control the targeting and start putting that energy into understanding your customer deeply, the whole approach to Meta changes. You stop asking “am I reaching the right people” and start asking “is my message strong enough that the right people will recognise themselves in it”. That is a much more useful question.
